  • Overview

    Performs physically intensive and detailed custodial maintenance of Arcadia University's academic, residential, administrative, research, athletic, dining, and support facilities in an assigned area. Cleans and maintains restrooms, public corridors, lobbies, offices, classrooms, laboratories, lounges, kitchens, apartments, laundry rooms, and athletic locker-room facilities. Vacuums, shampoos and extracts carpeting; scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors; polishes furniture and woodwork; thoroughly cleans and disinfects restroom facilities. Operates and maintains heavy-duty power custodial equipment. Job requires working in a dusty environment, using a variety of cleaning chemicals, working around unpleasant odors, including bodily fluids and waste, and performing emergency flood-water clean-ups. Maintain key security at all times. Performs work in close contact with the University personnel and the public including: students, faculty, and staff, respecting the privacy of all customers served. Maintain grounds in the immediate vicinity of the assigned area, by sweeping sidewalks and shoveling snow within 25 feet of all outside entrances.  

     

    Must have the ability to work weekends, evenings as well as on call.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions:

    • Comply with health and safety directives to include the use and / wearing of protective materials and devices.
    • Sweeping, dry/wet mopping vacuuming floors and vacuuming and spot cleaning carpets.
    • Floor striping, waxing, buffing and spray buffing.
    • Spotting and Shampooing carpets.
    • Dusting and cleaning walls.
    • High and low dusting of lights, ledges and pipes.
    • Dusting and cleaning furniture.
    • Cleaning windows, mirrors and glass surfaces.
    • Cleaning restrooms, which include all surfaces and restrooms fixtures, replenishment of paper products.
    • Transporting trash recycling to designated pickup areas in and around assigned buildings.
    • Cleaning chalkboards and trays, replenishment of erasers and chalk.
    • Emptying and cleaning ashtrays.
    • Removal of snow and trash, cigarette butts and other debris within 25 feet of all outside entrances.
    • Cleaning of vents/light fixtures.
    • Maintain the uniformity of furniture within the classroom, lounges and public areas.
    • Report missing furnishings in public areas to supervisor.
    • Submit service requests required to cover property repair and maintenance.
    • Submit lists of needed supplies to the supervisor in a timely manner.
    • Moving classroom and residence hall furniture and other property within assigned work areas, operates assigned vehicle when required to transport to another location.
    • Assist with the setup for special events as assigned.
    • Assemble/disassemble residence hall / academic building furnishings as assigned.
    • Recommend improvements in work efficiency.
    • May be required to climb ladders for cleaning assignments.
    • Clean stoves, refrigerators, dishes and the making of beds as assigned during summer months.
    • Assist with summer cleaning of all dormitories and academic buildings as needed.
    • Attend staff development trainings

    Qualifications

    Successful individual must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation

     

    Communication: Communicate and collaborate with all facility personnel.  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization

     

    Physical Requirements: The desire and ability to perform detailed, varied cleaning duties, working in a dusty environment, with unpleasant odors, and with substances including bodily fluids and waste.   Able to work with a variety of industrial-rated cleaning chemicals and be comfortable assisting with emergencies including water clean-ups.   Must be able to work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures.  

     

    Safety Management: Ability to learn all technical elements of the custodial maintenance process, and be able to physically and safely operate industrial-rated power equipment used in custodial maintenance field.  Maintaining key security, while respecting the privacy of faculty, staff and student work areas.

     

    Problem Solving and Analytical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's Ability to perform tasks using American money, weight measurement, volume and distance.  Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

     

    Collegiality/Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in strong team environment. Demonstrate a positive attitude and the ability to promote teamwork in a diverse working environment at all times. Strong work ethic.  Demonstrated exellence in attendance.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
    • Valid driver's license with no points
    • Requires successful completion of a background check, drug test and motor vehicle check
