Assistant Director of Residence and Commuter Life

The Assistant Director of Residence and Commuter Life coordinates retention and engagement efforts within the Residence and Commuter Life program, provides supervision for three Area Coordinators, coordinates basic campus-wide housing processes, serves as a disciplinary hearing officer, and supports the mission of the Student Affairs Office. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Residence and Commuter Life and with general accountability to the Assistant Dean of Residence and Commuter Life and the Associate Dean of Students. The Assistant Director is a member of the Residence and Commuter Life live-in staff, serves on the on-call team, and partners closely with the Student Affairs suite.


This is a full-time, 12-month position residing in campus housing.

Essential Functions:


Coordination of Retention and Engagement Efforts

  • Identify and use community and University resources to improve the Residence and Commuter Life program with attention to supervision and long range planning;
  • Work directly with the Assistant Deans and Directors of Residence and Commuter Life and Engagement and New Student Programs to support the first year experience
  • Act as a liaison to the Office of Public Safety and Facilities Management in conjunction with the Director of Residence and Commuter Life;
  • Manage integrated academic and student life experiences within the residence halls and commuter lounge
  • Coordinate assessment of Campus Life Staff learning outcomes in conjunction with Area Coordinator Staff;
  • Coordinate assessment of student learning outcomes in conjunction with Area Coordinator Staff.


Supervision of Area Coordinators

  • Directly supervise, evaluate, and train the Area Coordinators;
  • Serve as a resource to the Area Coordinators and Campus Life Staff for all programming efforts;
  • Review and assess the Campus Life Staff training program on an annual basis;
  • Serve as an advisor for Area Coordinator special projects.


Coordinate Campus-wide housing Processes

  • Oversee and approve academic year room change requests in conjunction with the Department Assistant for Housing;
  • Serve as the second-level contact for roommate mediations;
  • Manage housing processes such as Term Switch, Opening, Closing, Key inventories, and room changes;
  • In conjunction with the Director of Residence and Commuter life and Department Assistant for Housing, facilitate student housing processes such as Housing Selection and Assignments.


Participation in conduct and on-call processes

  • Serve as a conduct hearing officer for violations of the Code of Conduct and University Housing Agreement;
  • Serve as a conduct appeals officer for Area Coordinator team;
  • Oversee compliance with sanctions and manage data pertaining to mandated program attendance;
  • Participate in the campus-wide emergency on-call system.


Departmental Responsibilities

  • Work to establish and maintain an environment which promotes inclusivity, respect, compassion and citizenship;
  • Develop effective working relationships with other members and offices of the University community;
  • Participate on departmental committees as requested;
  • Provide general assistance to the Assistant Dean of Students for Residence and Commuter Life, the Director of Residence and Commuter Life, and support other members of the Student Affairs staff;
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Students, manage the Residence and Commuter Life budget;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Successful candidates will possess excellent organizational skills, ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty and staff.
  • Strong computer skills (StarRez and Maxient Databases, Microsoft Office suite including presentation software, Google Apps, and Apple products.)
  • Applicants must be student-centered and demonstrate a commitment to their own personal and professional growth.
  • Ability to learn and apply University policies and procedures to ensure operational compliance and reliable judgement.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with prescribed operating procedures/policies, safety standards, and legal and liability issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability is required, including a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and sensitivity to issues affecting a wide range of constituencies are required.
  • A record of inclusive conduct and evidence of multicultural skills in the workplace is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, and experience in building strong student relationships.



Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related discipline preferred;
  • Minimum three-five years of progressive responsibility in residence life/housing or related field.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with experience in housing and operations, student engagement, managing StarRez and Maxient database systems, and program assessment in a college/university setting;
  • Prior supervisory experience of professional staff is also preferred;
